Workshop 2: Introduction to High-Performance Computing using HMS’ O2 cluster
Big data analysis often requires the use of computing resources that extend well beyond what is available on a personal laptop. A common solution to this problem is to perform your data analysis on a remote computer. In this workshop we introduce participants to O2, a high-performance computing cluster at HMS. We will demonstrate the basics of using a remote compute environment and highlight the importance of it.
Learning objectives:
- Describe what a high-performance compute cluster is and what it can be used for
- Describe benefits offered by a large-scale cluster environment
- Login to the O2 cluster and Understand what a job scheduler is and how to use it
- Understand how to use the SLURM job scheduler to request resources
Prerequisites: Basic command-line knowledge is recommended for this workshop! If you do not have this, please plan to attend the Introduction to command-line interface workshop on June 18.
Requirements: Participants should bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on.
