Open Source Data Tools for Policy and Design: Using R for Data Visualization

Date:

Tuesday, October 4, 2022, 2:30pm to 4:30pm

Location:

HKS Library & Research Services

This is the first in a three-part series of data visualization workshops jointly taught by the Harvard Kennedy School Library and the Loeb Library at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. We will be hosting each workshop twice: once at HKS and once at GSD.

Instructors are James Adams (Manager of Research & Data Services, HKS Library) and Bruce Boucek (GIS, Data, & Research Librarian, Loeb Library at GSD).

The HKS version of this workshop will take place in Wexner 434B (fourth floor of the Wexner building).

In this hands-on workshop, we will introduce data sets we will use throughout our series and use the R programming language to import and visualize the data. Using R’s popular ggplot2 package, we will cover basic principles and practices for creating effective data visualizations. We will create a variety of plots using techniques that you will be able to use to visualize your own data.

We want to begin promptly, so please make sure to download and install both of the following prior to the workshop:

Can't make it to this workshop? We're teaching it again at GSD on October 6. Check the Harvard Library Events Calendar for details and registration.
