HKS Software Carpentry Workshop

HKS Library is a hosting a two-day Software Carpenty Workshop, geared towards HKS graduate students and other researchers. Non-HKS affiliates are welcome to register, though we are reserving a majority of the slots for HKS affiliates.

Software Carpentry is all about learning foundational knowledge to pursue data-intensive research with confidence. Not only can the basic tools and concepts taught in this workshop help you get your assignments done in less time and with less pain, they’ll help prepare you to contribute to a public policy landscape where data and technical skills are in higher and higher demand. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

In this workshop, you’ll learn program design, version control, data management, and task automation using the following tools:

  • Unix Shell
  • Git
  • R
  • Text editor

Who: This workshop is geared toward graduate students and other researchers. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. Non-HKS affiliates are welcome to register, though we are reserving a majority of the slots for HKS affiliates. 

When: Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. A detailed schedule is available on the workshop website.

Where: We’ll spend both days in the Ellwood Democracy Lab (Rubenstein 414) on the HKS campus. Coffee, pastries, and lunch will be provided both days.
