Workshop 3: Version Control for Scripts, Data and Text documents
Tired of wading through files titled paper_v1, paper_v2, paper_v3_beforeAdvisor... ? This hands-on workshop will introduce the concepts of using a version control system to manage changes and the history of your data files (text, web, scripts, etc.). Attendees will participate in multiple exercises in setting up repositories, where the changes and history are stored, working through the iterative process of altering files & recording changes, and rewinding the clock to retrieve a file at any point in the creative process.
Note: You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. However, please follow the installation requirments.
Requirements: Participants should bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on. Additionally:
- Anyone with Windows OS will need to install Git for Windows: https://gitforwindows.org
- Everyone will need to install Git Kraken Client: https://www.gitkraken.com/git-client
- Everyone will need to have a github account: https://github.com
